Andrew & Brian

Andrew is 16 and left Perth High School in May 2006. He started his work placement with Brian Tavendale Electrical, a local self-employed electrician, in June. Brian and Andrew now spend 5 days a week travelling around Perth, undertaking all manner of domestic electrical work.

Andrew said, "I felt a bit nervous, a bit weird at first, but then you get speaking to him and get to know him - it makes it easier. I spend most of my time with Brian. Sometimes there are other tradesmen around and that's good to but I tend to stick with him. I like working more one to one. I've told all my mates about this. They think it's good.

Brian thinks that it's a good deal, "What do you get for £40.00 a week these days? Andrew's the first laddie I've taken on since I've been on my own. I had to pay an extra £76 on my employer's liability insurance to take him on but it's been worth it. Let's say if he goes out to my van 5 times a day and comes back with the right tools, he's paid for his wages for the day. If I had to do that it's an hour wasted."
